Two Kinds of Wisdom: What’s Really Leading Your Life? | James 3:13-18
There’s a question woven into James 3 that quietly stops you in your tracks:
“Who is wise and understanding among you?” (James 3:13)
At first, it feels like a question about knowledge. About insight. About how much we know.
But James shifts the focus almost immediately.
If you’re truly wise, he says, it won’t just show up in what you say, it will show up in how you live.
Wisdom That Shows
Biblical wisdom isn’t measured by intelligence, knowledge, or how well we speak.
It’s revealed through a life marked by humility, obedience, and good works.
Not works that save us, but works that flow from a heart that knows God.
True wisdom is visible.
It looks like a life that reflects Him in the everyday moments, how we respond, how we serve, how we love.
It’s not just something we claim.
It’s something we live.
A Heart Check We Can’t Ignore
Then James lovingly but firmly brings us to a place of honesty.
He names what so often hides beneath the surface:
Bitter envy.
Selfish ambition.
The quiet pull toward comparison, recognition, or striving to be seen.
If I’m honest, this is where the Lord has been gently convicting me lately.
It’s so easy to let comparison or striving sneak in quietly, especially in the middle of a full, busy season. But every time I do, I notice the same thing: my peace starts to slip away.
And that alone is a signal.
Because James tells us that when these things take root, we’re no longer walking in God’s wisdom.
We may still look like we are on the outside…
But something deeper is misaligned.
He describes this kind of “wisdom” as earthly, unspiritual, even influenced by the enemy rather than the Spirit of God.
That’s a sobering truth.
Because it means we can think we’re walking in wisdom…while our hearts are being shaped by something completely different.
The Better Way
But James doesn’t leave us there.
He gives us a clear, beautiful picture of what true wisdom, the kind that comes from God, actually looks like:
Pure.
Peace-loving.
Gentle.
Open to reason.
Full of mercy.
Overflowing with good fruit.
Impartial.
Sincere.
This kind of wisdom feels different.
It doesn’t strive, it surrenders.
It doesn’t demand, it serves.
It doesn’t stir division, it creates peace.
It flows from a heart that is fully yielded to the Lord.
The Seeds We’re Sowing
James closes this passage with a powerful image:
“Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” (James 3:18)
Every single day, we are sowing seeds.
Through our words.
Our reactions.
Our attitudes.
Our choices.
Some seeds lead to tension, comparison, and disorder.
Others lead to peace, healing, and righteousness.
And often, the seeds don’t feel significant in the moment.
But they are.
Because the harvest we experience tomorrow is shaped by what we plant today.
Sowing peace might look like:
choosing patience when your child interrupts you for the fifth time
responding gently instead of reacting in frustration
refusing to compare your life to what you see online
speaking life over your home instead of criticism
pausing to pray instead of pushing forward in your own strength
These are small seeds.
But in God’s hands, they grow into something far greater.
Pause + Reflect
Take a moment and sit with the Lord:
Where might envy, comparison, or striving be creeping into my heart?
What has been fueling my decisions lately, peace or pressure?
Am I seeking God’s wisdom first, or leaning on my own understanding?
Let Him gently reveal anything that needs to be brought into the light.
A Simple Invitation
Today isn’t about striving to “do better.”
It’s about realigning your heart.
Ask the Lord for His wisdom.
Release anything rooted in pride, envy, or self.
And choose, intentionally, to sow peace in your thoughts, your words, and your actions.
Even in the small, unseen moments.
Because those are the very places where true wisdom begins to take root.
A Simple Prayer
Lord,
Search my heart and reveal anything in me that isn’t aligned with Your wisdom.
Uproot any envy, striving, or pride, and replace it with Your peace.
Teach me to walk in humility, to respond with gentleness, and to sow peace in every area of my life.
I want my life to reflect You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
