How to Plan Your Life With God | James 4:13-17
If you love planning, setting goals, and dreaming about the future, you’re not alone.
But James 4:13-17 offers a perspective shift that every believer needs to hear:
Planning isn’t the problem.
Planning without God is.
In this passage, James addresses a subtle but dangerous mindset, living as if we are in control of tomorrow.
Let’s break it down.
The Problem: Planning Without God
James starts with a strong callout:
“Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city… carry on business and make money.”
At first glance, this sounds responsible. Strategic, even.
But the issue isn’t the plan itself, it’s the assumption of control.
These individuals:
Assumed they had time
Assumed they knew the outcome
Assumed success was theirs to secure
And how often do we do the same?
We map out our lives without ever pausing to ask:
“God, is this what YOU want?”
The Reality: Your Life Is a Mist
James responds with a humbling truth:
“You do not even know what will happen tomorrow… You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
This isn’t meant to create fear, it’s meant to create perspective.
Your life is:
Temporary
Unpredictable
Completely held in God’s hands
And instead of that being overwhelming, it should actually bring freedom.
You don’t have to control everything.
You were never meant to.
The Shift: “If the Lord Wills”
James gives us a better way:
“If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
This is not just a phrase, it’s a posture.
It looks like:
Inviting God into your planning process
Holding your goals with open hands
Being willing to pivot when He redirects
Trusting that His plan is better than yours
Jesus modeled this perfectly in the garden:
“Not my will, but Yours be done.”
The Warning: Pride in Our Plans
James doesn’t soften his words:
“All such boasting is evil.”
Why?
Because self-reliance elevates us and removes God.
When we act like we’re in control, we:
Diminish God’s authority
Inflate our own importance
Forget our dependence on Him
True wisdom plans, but always under God’s sovereignty.
The Final Conviction: The Sin of Inaction
James closes with a powerful statement:
“If anyone knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
This shifts the conversation from planning… to obedience.
It’s not just about avoiding wrong actions.
It’s about following through on what God has already asked you to do.
That might look like:
Reaching out to someone
Apologizing
Saying yes (or no)
Taking a step of faith
Delayed obedience is still disobedience.
What This Means for You
You don’t need to stop planning your life.
But you do need to change how you plan.
Instead of asking:
“What do I want to accomplish?”
Start asking:
“God, what are You asking of me today?”
Because ultimately:
The most successful life is not the one that goes according to your plan, but the one that aligns with His.
Final Encouragement
Plan your week.
Set your goals.
Dream big.
But do it with God, with this posture:
“If the Lord wills.”
That’s where peace is.
That’s where clarity is.
And that’s where true freedom is found.
